Displaying the contents
of a Shelter Box, providing a roof for a homeless family after a
disaster. The Shelter Box contains a tent, sleeping bags, water
purifying tablets, candles, rope, shovel, windup flashlight, cooking
pans, and other essential tools and equipment for up to ten people.
Rotary clubs across the
world rallied to the aid of the victims of the devastating earthquake
that flattened Bam, Iran, on the night of 26 December 2003. More
than 30,000 residents of the 2,000-year-old city were killed and
some 80,000 left homeless by the disaster. Three days after the
disaster struck, UK, US and Canadian Rotarians dispatched 210 Rotary
Shelter Boxes to Bam. The Rotary Shelter Boxes provided a temporary
roof for hundreds of homeless families in their time of great need,
in addition to furnishing the basics to help them start their lives
over.
Stop Press: The proceeds of the collection
at the Regatta, The Strawberry Sunday in August and the Wine Tasting
in September contributed to the purchase of a Shelter Box with an
additional cooker in November 2004. |
