Barn Dance 27th June 2008

We joined our Rotary friends from Bourne End and Cookham to take part in the Barn Dance at Lower Culham Farm in Henley.

There was a good turn out of 300+ and everyone spread out across the various barns to dance, chat and enjoy a fish and chip supper freshly cooked from the fish and chip van.

Murder Mystery

St Katherines, Parmoor.

The evening of Friday 27th July saw about 80 Rotarians and friends posing as guests at a wedding. The men were dressed in suits, sporting buttonholes and the ladies excelled themselves with hats and fashionable wedding attire.

All of this was in order to take part in a murder mystery evening arranged by Senior Vice President Frank.

The River Boat Trip (June 2007)

Another year and we are guessing the weather – will it rain or will the sun shine on us?

From 12.30 on it starts to get busy, the team is in place at the gang plank, Inner Wheel is arriving ready for the tea and our guests are either walking or being delivered.

Each year we never know which way we are going until we leave Higginson Park but, this year, it was our turn to sail down stream and sample the delights of Cookham, Clivedon, Boulters Lock and Bray.

Kids Fun Day Out

After raising most of the money needed from the people of Marlow by a street collection, the Rotary Club of Marlow ventured out once again with an enthusiastic coach full of young handicapped and under privileged children with their helpers for a day out at Burford Wild Life Park .

Although we were not lucky with the weather at least it stopped raining when the time came to explore the wild life park and meet the animals.

A picnic lunch was provided by Rotary and each child allocated pocket money towards the cost of ice creams and other treats.

This is a wonderful project bringing happiness to children in need courtesy of the people of Marlow

GSE Visit from Hong Kong April 2007

We were honoured in Marlow to be chosen by District to host this year’s incoming GSE team from Hong Kong, Macao and Mongolia. The team consisted of Rotarian Silva Tak-Wah Yeung (team leader), Rotaractor Kevin Wai-Hon Lei, Jessica Wing-Sze Chan, Tinny Mei-Kam Wong and Andrew Wai-Tat Fung.

A day’s outing to Windsor was enjoyed by the team as was a visit to Henley Management College, Leander and the Henley Rowing Museum. Apart from our own club meeting, the team also visited the Rotary Clubs of Marlow Thames and Henley-on-Thames.

You wait all year for Santa........ (December 2005)

Around 100 runners dressed as Father Christmas took part in the 5km fun run on Sunday 4th December. The event staged for the first time gave people an opportunity to dress up as Santa Claus after paying a £10 entry fee. Runners raised money for both Rotary and their own chosen charity.

The event was so successful that it is set to become a new date in the busy Marlow calendar. Some of the money raised will go towards the President's charity - Mercy Ships, which provides aid through cruise ships in Africa.

The River Boat Trip (June 2005)

The annual boat trip for senior citizens took place on July 20th; as usual starting from Higginson Park. This time we sailed upstream towards Henley. The weather was perfect, with sunshine interspersed with occasional cloud.

Having solved the problem of a lack of teaspoons by raiding the adjacent boat, the trip progressed uneventfully. Tea provided by Burgers and served by the ladies of Inner Wheel was enjoyed by all on board. Thanks go especially to St. John's Ambulance for assisting with the safety of all passengers.

The 4 Club Week-end in Venice (September 2004)

Members of the International and Foundation committee relax with President David Saunders after meeting with partner clubs Venezia Mestre, (Venice) La Celle St. Cloud, (France) and Binche (Belgium) to review our joint project in Bolivia. It was good news - the initial donations by the four clubs of €10,400 had been increased by Rotary International matched funding and other donations to a massive €26,000 - all of which had now been invested in a new hospital project.

The weather was glorious, and made the trip quite idyllic. Travelling up and down the canals between the vistas of the canals and historic buildings of Venice was a wonderful experience. The week-end included a private tour of St Mark's museum, two wonderful lunches, a trip in the lagoon to the Island of Burrano, and a formal dinner at our hotel.

June 2004 at the Marlow Town Regatta and Festival

Displaying the contents of a Shelter Box, providing a roof for a homeless family after a disaster. The Shelter Box contains a tent, sleeping bags, water purifying tablets, candles, rope, shovel, windup flashlight, cooking pans, and other essential tools and equipment for up to ten people.

Rotary clubs across the world rallied to the aid of the victims of the devastating earthquake that flattened Bam, Iran, on the night of 26 December 2003. More than 30,000 residents of the 2,000-year-old city were killed and some 80,000 left homeless by the disaster. Three days after the disaster struck, UK, US and Canadian Rotarians dispatched 210 Rotary Shelter Boxes to Bam. The Rotary Shelter Boxes provided a temporary roof for hundreds of homeless families in their time of great need, in addition to furnishing the basics to help them start their lives over.

Stop Press: The proceeds of the collection at the Regatta, The Strawberry Sunday in August and the Wine Tasting in September contributed to the purchase of a Shelter Box with an additional cooker in November 2004.
